HK Support Brigades Two Fire Towers: Berowra and Galston.
Berowra Fire Tower
The Berowra Fire Tower, located on the Pacific Highway, just south of Cowan, was officially opened on the 29th October 2000. Crew members keep a keen eye out for smoke in the Hornsby Shire area and along with Galston Fire Tower spot, triangulate and report smoke sightings.
The Tower normally operates on the first weekend of each month and the following Tuesday and Wednesday, and on all Total Fire Bans (weather permitting).
As the tower is 34 metres high, members need a healthy respect for heights and the ability to climb ladders. Once you are up there, the tower offers one of the best views of Sydney!
Galston Fire Tower
The 18 metre tower began operation in 1977 and is located off Crosslands Road at Galston. The tower was created out of a redundant electricity pylon that members of the Galston Bush Fire Brigade transformed. The cabin was built from steel at the Galston RFS station and lowered on to the top of the pylon with a crane. Galston Fire tower operates in conjunction with the Berowra Fire Tower.
The tower is completely solar powered and has been since it was built.
From the Tower a 360-degree view takes in the lower Blue Mountains, the Central Coast and the North Shore.
